What area has easiest access to public transportation options?

Hi,
I’m visiting at the end of July and am not sure where to stay. I want to narrow it down by a location that has good access to public transportation so it’s easier to get around.
I’ll be doing the touristy things like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, aquarium, probably the wharf.
Is union square a good place to find a hotel that would be close to a lot of MUNI options?
