Why meeting someone through a friend or relative doesn't work now and days?

Before men and women met through someone they know. Why is it different now that they say they don't want anything to happen if we break up and ruin their friendships with the people they met you through? I've met girls through friends and family and they say no because if something goes wrong between us they don't want to ruin their friendships with their current friends...why is that so common now?
