Why are men so obsessed with "preserving" women?

Whether it's our youth, looks, "purity" (whatever the Hell that really is), innocence... why do men seem to have this instinctual need to throttle women from exploring, maturing, and ultimately coming into ourselves? Or worse, figuratively (in in certain times/cultures literally) hobbling us to prevent it? What gives?
