I am a musician, and I want to soundproof my basement room. Any experienced musicians have suggestions on how to do this on the cheap?

I have googled extensively, but I've found that communities of people often have insight not available in search engines.
Having said that, any advice would be helpful at this point: have you had success with egg cartons? Old carpet? Certain types of stores I should ask for free scrap material? Your help is my gain: thank you!
