How can I gain access to the archives of The Village Voice or the NY Magazine ? (please help!!)

I have a project that I am working on. I came home (outside of NYC) to work on a project about Hell's Kitchen and the Westies (irish gang). My teacher said I should try and get into the archives of the Village voice and the NY Magazine, but I am having trouble doing so. Needless to say, after asking too many people and getting no answer, I decided to turn to you, reddit! Please help me out!

PS (my brother is in grad school at NYU.... if I can use his account to gain access to these sites Archives I will do so, but he said he doesn't know).
