Will a European TomTom work in the States?

My mother, who lives in the Netherlands, has a TomTom GPS she no longer wants and asked me if I'd like it. I live in the States and am wondering if it'll work here, i.e. do I just subscribe to the service here and it'll download the US maps or are there blockers in play that won't let me use it (like cell phones being locked to prevent you using another carrier's sim cards)
