Anyone know anything about spiders?

I was mowing my parent's lawn this afternoon and stumbled upon this magnificent lady. She is quite large, and her web is even larger.

Any idea what kind it is? It looks like it has a sword or cross on the top part of her abdomen by her neck.
EDIT: Changed his -> her, as this ended up being a female spider.
