Teach me how to make a costume.

I still have no costume for Halloween this year, and was thinking about making a domo-kun costume... but not sure what would be the best way to build such a thing. I think cardboard might be too flimsy, and would make the curvy edges difficult. How are voluminous costumes like that normally made?
...also, in case that doesn't work out, any ideas for other costumes I could pull together in a short time? :x
