Who are the "cool"/elite people on a orchestra/band?

I've heard of first chairs before, but I didn't know if those were just nerds or what.
Is there a place that the "cool people" or elite people (basically like popular/cool people that everyone wishes they were or hate because of that.) generally congregate?
Like specific instruments, or positions, etc.
This can either be a high school experience, college, or real world thing, doesn't matter.
Emphasis on "auditorium" bands: more classy stuff, but anything is fine really.
