Where do you go to find good domain hosting like in the olden days?

I keep looking at these large domain hosts and they all do the same sort of everything is a service and everything is a package. This is so annoying. I just want ftp and e-mail why is this so hard to find? It's like simple isn't in anyone's vocabulary anymore.
