What steps are involved in accommodating the President's attendance at a sporting event?

The Obama family attended a college basketball game that Michelle's brother was coaching (Oregon State).
Obviously he can't just walk into the arena like any other fan, but it got me wondering... what does the Secret Service do as well as the arena to prepare for this?
- How much notice is given to the venue?
- How does the Secret Service vet everyone else that will be in attendance? Can they even?
- How much tougher is security/screening at such events compared with normal?
I'm sure there are a dozen other questions that could be interesting to see answered... but to me it seems like it would be extremely interesting to see how they manage to do this and keep everyone safe.
