Those who use their psychology degree, have you ever been manipulated by a client? What happened?
Comments

Yes - when I was in my internship in grad school a client of mine was recovering from alcohol addiction and had been depressed with SI. He told me all these great things, like he was slowly working on his research project (was a PhD student) and finding things to live for and such. Really I thought he was doing amazing and getting ready for discharge. Walked in one day to news he killed himself - we heard from his mother that he had been barely hanging on for awhile now and she stopped him from attempting multiple times but never took him to a hospital because he promised he’d tell me in his next appointment. Obviously he didn’t tell me, even when I did risk assessments in every session he always denied.

I blamed myself for a long long time, especially since I was a baby therapist and this was one of my first individual clients. I still think about this client a lot and it has had quite the impact on me as a clinician.
