I've always been very conscious of trying to help homeless people whenever I can, usually by purchasing food for them. Freshman year of college I had a meal plan and my friends thought I was really weird for inviting a homeless guy into the dining hall with me as my guest. He was easily the most thankful guy I have ever helped. It was winter and very cold in Philadelphia, and I thought a warm meal would be nice. He was amazed that he coukd eat all he wanted for free. He even got down on the ground and kissed my shoes, which I tried to get him to stop doing as quickly as possible.
Ever since I was a kid, I've been very aware that most other people simply pretend they don't exist and just walk past. I think this is very unkind treatment because it dehumanizes the homeless and makes it seem like they don't need help.
