I (23M) have been having some patient care issues surrounding Anti-psychotics and I'd like some advice. I was diagnosed with pretty severe OCD 5 years ago and ADD 15 years ago, both of which i've been treating with a combination of Psychiatry appts and Therapy. Around 3 years ago, I made the move along with my family to Las Vegas. I switched jobs/insurance and had to find a new Psych, kept my old Therapist as I was just paying OOP. I have never had a prior history of gambling/impulse problems but two years ago my Psych prescribed me 2.5mg of Abilify and titrated it over the course of a few weeks to 25mg/twice day. The Psych that presc. me abilify warned me about tiredness and weight gain but nothing about impulsivity. During the titration process I complained about spending more money/gambling (which I had rarely done before despite already living in Vegas for a year) and my Psych seemed to ignore me. I'm also a psych student and wanted to find the root cause of this sudden impulsivity and found research pointing to Abilify/Anti-Psychotics. I shared this with that Psych (along with news of my drastic weight gain) and she weened me off Abilify and my parents controlled my finances for a while. I don't think I blame her as this isn't the most common side effect. Partly because of this, I moved states to limit my access to gambling. I transitioned to a new Psychiatrist who had notes of my bad interaction with Abilify. I told him repeatedly and strongly that Abilify makes me impulsive. He prescribed me a starting dose of Vraylar and titrated it up. Well lo-and-behold, a couple weeks into treatment my impulsiveness erupted and I emptied most of my savings. I called him after a moment of clarity and he told me to stop the Vraylar cold turkey. I did.
The problem I face now is that he wants to prescribe me Caplyta instead. I just got off the phone with him telling him that I really don't want to take it and am terrified of the side effects. He kept assuring me that Caplyta is more calming and won't cause me to gamble and wrote me a script that I just got filled. I'm worried about taking it and I don't know what to do because I literally can't afford another impulsive episode.
TLDR: I've experienced severe impulsivity from both Abilify and Vraylar and my current Dr. just prescribed me Caplyta and I don't know what/whether to take it.
Also, If anyone could give me advice on how to explain the missing 2k from my bank account to my parents I would greatly appreciate it. Note i'm of legal age but still have close relationships with the fam and rely on their financial support.
