Should I ask a professor for an update on status of my application?

I emailed a professor looking for an undergraduate research opportunity. He said that he doesn't have an opening in his group and has contacted a colleague who might have an opportunity. He said that he'd get back to me as soon as he has more news but it's been 3 weeks and I haven't heard from him. Would it be rude to ask him for an update? If not, how exactly should I word it?
