Hi, I am a first year college student in the US. I am taking a Relationships and Health class this semester, and my first class day is January 16th. This semester, I'll be working at a hospital that requires an onboarding and fingerprinting to be done before I can start. The only day and time the hospital allows this to be done is during this first class period. This is only a one-time absence and would not be repeated. I have a lab position with this professor, so she likes me, and she is overall pretty chill (her class is a low workload/ she's not a stickler).
If I was a student in your class, would you be upset or offended if I emailed asking for permission to miss class? Is it better that I am upfront or should I be vague about why I would miss class? I am otherwise a diligent and involved student and expect to miss class very rarely during the semester.

Yeah but a lot of colleges have a requirement that a student be dropped if they don’t attend the first class. Reaching out would be their best bet to find out if they’re going to be dropped
