Hi ya there /r/askphotography, I have a question for all you good people here
I currently have the classic Fuji X100 as well as Canon G15, which I mainly kept because of its useful zoom range and because it does video quite well and my dad like to do video.
Problems:
- G15 lacks external mic input so we got a lot of wind noise in our videos
Why EOS-M?
- it's dirt cheap, have 3.5mm mic input, have good sensor and lens choices for video, and can have Magic Lantern and more control for video, not to mention the size
Dilemma:
- Both the Fuji and EOS-M are APS-sized compact cameras, I don't think I can justify having both for a long term use.
- Lack of O/EVF on EOS-M doesn't bother me since the O/EVF experience in X100 doesn't match that of my Canonet rangefinder, and I end up using the screen anyway.
Funding source
- as in the introduction, I will sell/swap the g15, I'm also selling one excess notebook in my inventory which might fetch another $400 or more
So here's what I'm thinking now:
Option 1: Keep Fuji X100 and get EOS-M
- sell/swap g15 for EOS M 18-55 EFtM package (similar price here)
- one more lens for M at ~$300, I think the Rokinon 12mm 2.0
- spend another ~$100 aside for a mic and stabilizer
Option 2: Sell all gears and go full EOS M
- sell/swap g15 for EOS M 22mm EFtM
- get Rokinon 12mm f2.0 and Tamron 18-200 EF M
- mic and stabilizer as above
- buy a Canon P or 7 in good condition with a 50mm f1.4 that can double as portrait in the M
Option 3: settle for sub-1" compact cam
- swap that g15 with a nikon p7700/7800
- mic and stabilizer as above
- Canon P or 7 with 50mm and another m39 lens to the pack
With Option 1 I get two cameras with good IQ and in which one I can record video on, and with the autofocus lens, I can hand it over to my dad for his video recording pleasures in holidays, with me taking stills from my X100.
With Option 2 I can use the M for whatever purposes I need and actually gain a very good all-purpose lens with higher IQ than any zoom compact can ever achieve. But I won't be able to take digital stills when I hand over the M to my dad for his video recording hobby.
With Option 3, I still have two very compact set ups with minimal gears (better suited for the geography and society I live in) and still get the analog pleasures from Canon's ancient rangefinder past.
Option 1 and 2 with the EOS-M opens up a whole lot new possibilities and whatnot with cinematic form of memories rather than those "handycam" feels
Option 3 is much more rational since the Nikon P7xxx is very easy to use and I can leave it at my parents' for them to use since it's simple enough for them to operate
Thoughts? Perhaps /r/askphotography can give me a more rational input to this?
