What lights should I get to create Gregory Crewdson style dynamic lighting?

I know there is a LOT more that goes into coming close to achieving his style. I just want to buy some lights that will have enough power and flexibility that they won’t hold me back. I would like them to be portable. But I also would love to know if anyone knows if LEDs can even achieve that painterly feel.
