Which cropped frame camera for occasional amateur sports photography?

Post Body

I'm a pretty experienced photographer generally, but have been out of the gear buying game for about 8 years and so my gear knowledge is likely out of date. I currently have a Pentax 645Z, and while it is good for things that need medium format quality, I've been doing a little more sports photography and 3FPS isn't exactly ideal.

I primarily photograph golf outdoors, so don't necessarily indoor light level performance. I'm thinking cropped format sensor to get that little extra distance out of lenses. Maybe something in the 8FPS and up to 24mp (not picky though). My past experience has been with Nikon, and I generally like the feel of the system.

I'll be looking to buy a used body, since there isn't the budget for a new camera (I'll save my money for the lens). What are some cameras that I should consider? Any other advice or considerations are appreciated.

Edit: I should have included my budget. I think sub-$1000CDN for the body ideally.
