Buying flash gun batteries: what AA batteries are best?

So I'm looking at some 2800mah online, I have been using 1300 - the best my town sells unfortunately, the results are very extremely variable - between 20 to150 shots, recharge time between shots is acceptable but not where I want it. I have a cheap light carry flash gun which takes 2 batteries and a better one for small jobs or, hopefully better jobs in the future. What do I need to look out for to get the best batteries with reasonable life and a good recharge cycle?
