Need equipment for watch photography and I'm only fixed on a 105mm 2.8 macro. What else to buy around?

Hey everyone,

I used to do fashion photography a while back, sold all my gear, then got into watch photography with a 105mm 2.8 macro lens, and eventually sold that gear too. Now, I'm back and need equipment for watch photography again (I'm a professional dealer now). I still have a lightbox but nothing else.

What I need:

  • Body
  • Lens(es)
  • Tripod

What I'm shooting:

Mainly watches in a lightbox (60x60cm), watch boxes, papers, and sometimes multiple watches in a setup.

Video needs:

Watch videos are becoming popular, especially showing how they tick. I’d like to eventually get into more advanced stuff with a slider rail and rotating plate for added movement. Photos are my main focus, but I can’t underestimate video quality either.

What I’m thinking:

The tripod is a straightforward decision, but for lenses, I’m really sold on the 105mm 2.8 macro. I used one in the past, and it’s perfect for the job. I'd love to get that again.

Not fixed on brands:

  • I’ve shot with Nikon, Canon (7D), and Sony (A7 II) in the past.
  • I’m open to full-frame or APS-C, mirrorless or DSLR—doesn’t matter.
  • Budget is as low as possible (preferably under €1k), and I’m happy with second-hand gear. I’m based in Europe.

My questions:

  1. Is the 105mm macro my best choice? Would I be good with something like a 70-150mm macro, especially considering video work? Or should I go with a cheaper 24-70mm f/4 and still get a solid 105mm 2.8 for macro shots?
  2. What body would be suitable for this? From my research, a Canon 90D seems to beat the older 6D, but I’ve been out of the game for 5 years and can’t keep up with the latest. Any old but reliable suggestions?
  3. Any recommendations for the best 105mm macro (or similar) lens? I noticed the Sony Sigma 105mm combo is pricey. Open to any body lens suggestions that fit my needs and budget.

Thanks a lot! 🌹
