How to use filters with step rings without jamming?

How can I prevent aluminum filters from getting stuck in the step rings? I know that brass rings are the solution but they are rare and expensive. Even with a filter wrench it is always problem for me to remove slim alu CPL from alu step up ring. Maybe it's possible to put something safe on the thread or whatever.
