I bought a 70-200 2.8 Canon lens this weekend and tried it at my son's hockey game yesterday on my Canon SL2. This rink does not have good lighting and I was having to use like 3200 ISO and a slower shutter speed and the pictures came out pretty noisy and dark. The other struggle was the 5 FPS, I would take a few then it would need to buffer and it wasn't great.
The crop sensor made 70mm closer than it would be on full frame which was kind of an issue if they were close. A full frame would help a bit but likely not enough to make a huge difference.
Would upgrading to a 90d help? I was even thinking an old used 1DX might be better. I really am only going to use it for hockey photography, sometimes I might take it on vacations.
My main goal is to just get nice quality hockey pictures at the moment, I don't want to break the bank on buying a new body but could buy something used if it would help.
