Why do people call lenses with wide apertures “fast”?
Post Body

I’m somewhat new to photography so I was hoping someone could help me understand this. I hear people calling lenses with apertures such as 1.4 fast but don’t understand why. As far as I understand, aperture refers to the size of the blade opening so why is that referred to as fast? Where does speed fit into the equation? What am I missing here? TIA
