How locally accessible are devices running full tunnel VPN clients?

I'm looking at perimeter security requirements for a network where all the client devices will be connected to a remote network through a software VPN client (full tunnel configuration).
In that configuration, I'm unclear how accessible those devices will be from the local network? Are they able to be locally pinged, port scanned, or have services access via the local network, or would any activity need to be routed through the remote network?
