How common is traditional malware today?

Post Body

Hello, apologies since this isn't exactly the most technical question. I remember a few years ago trying to find and install as much malware as I could on a VM for fun. It was very difficult and I only got web-based scams and ads. I remember as a kid (early 2010s) that malware was only one ad or one weird CNET download away. It makes sense that traditional download and run malware has diminished; why take the time to find an exploit, write a program to use it, steal information and then use it manually, exposing yourself to all kinds of risks and liability? Now you can just scam people on all platforms or OSes into looking at your ads. Has traditional malware targeting consumer users gone away? How do you genuinely get malware nowadays through semi-normal internet use?
