Trying to research the actual ROI of doing software security audits (I believe, but can't prove, that auditing saves money in the end). Anyone aware of any papers that spell it out in non-ambiguous terms?

Post Body
I've seen plenty of blog posts and even reports (that seem to be published by companies selling their auditing services), but having trouble with anything academic, especially peer reviewed, that would support a position of "auditing is cheaper than being exploited" other than just providing a formula for individual entities to do the math for themselves. Is there any empirical data?
edit: to clarify, Iām specifically talking about software security auditing.
