What is your interpretation of "exposed to the internet"?

When cyber sec people refer to a storage server or bucket being "exposed to the internet", what do they actually mean?
Isn't most cloud-based storage such as Dropbox, Sharepoint, Google Docs etc "exposed" to the internet already?
So what exactly is meant by this term?
Does it mean that it's not password protected and anyone can access it?
This term seems a bit ambiguous - hoping someone can shed some light on it?
