Is Apple Pay safe if my iPhone already infected with malware or spyware or compromised?

As someone who frequently uses Apple Pay for transactions, I'm concerned about the safety of my cards information. I know Apple Pay is supposed to be secure, but I'm not sure if it can still protect the card information me if my device is compromised.
Can the malware access my sensitive card information added into Apple Pay Wallet?
