What do you guys wear in the winter/snow?

Might seem like a really stupid question but Iām(21F) moving from socal to nyc this fall and have no idea what to buy as far as new york winters? Do I actually need those big tall and heavy sorel snow boots, or will I be fine with a waterproof chelsea boot? Also I heard parkas are good...honestly any suggestions are great, Iām at a loss really.
