Gay friendly neighboords, at a commuting distance to midtown manhattan?

Early 30s. Single. Moved to NYC and looking for a gay-friendly neighborhood - where I can meet and make a lot of gay friends. At the same time, be around gay folks all the time to feel comfortable.

* Currently staying in UES (1st Ave & 73rd) and paying 2800 for a mini-studio. it is safe, pretty boring to be honest.

* Commute to work in midtown manhattan 2-3 times a week.

* Could opt for roommates - but I don't really know anyone in the area !

* Budget: upto 2500, prefer a 1 BD since I work from home 2-3 days a week.

* Preferences: Closeby a good gym. And an active gayborhood neighborhood which is safe.

Please suggest options. Any help and detailed inputs from pros in the community, much appreciated!
