Growing up in the northeast US I was pumped to move to NYC and eat the same pizza that the Ninja Turtles ate, looked incredible and I heard endless stories about how NYC is the pizza king. From John's to Joes to everywhere in between... here we go, I thought!
What'd I find? Walk into Joe's, order a pepperoni slice. Guy takes a cold cheese slice and sprinkles pepperoni ON TOP of the cheese and tosses it in the oven for a minute. Takes it out, and slides it over to me on a plate, and my heart dropped... am I at the wrong Joe's? Nope, this is the one.. so what the eff?
Head to John's, sweet sauce and weird dough, have a look at the giant clear trash bags of penny sauce as I'm leaving, garbage.
Then I walk by countless places in west village with garbage pasta all over their slices, and some of the most horrifically waxy cracked cheese sitting out waiting to be reheated for some drunk bro to shove down their neck.
Fast forward 10 years and I've eaten pretty much every slice from Midtown down, and it's all damned horrifying.
Was NYC pizza ever great? Maybe, maybe when there were people making it who give a shi**t, but in the last ten years it's just horrible.
What's the spot outside of downtown Manhattan?
