How long did you live in NYC before you got the feel for it?

For some reason I don’t associate the word “local” with nyc. Ik it doesn’t make sense but when I think of locals in big cities I think of places like Nashville. NYC feels almost too big.
How long did it take until you got the vibe for what places are cool vs tourist traps?
Would you recommend these places to travelers (bars, clubs, food, shopping etc.)?
