Purchasing tickets in advance

Good evening and thank you for reading. We will be visiting mid-October. At that time of year is it necessary to purchase tickets in advance for the various attractions? We are interesting in the Met, Top of the Rock and the Museum of Natural History. I think the rest of the places we want to see are free or don't require tickets. Any advice is appreciated.
