Is paying $1,500 in for a basement apartment a lot if you lived in your parents' house

While I know NYC is expensive. I was just kind of shocked that a friend of mine who lives in Briarwood in Queens pays his mom $1,000 and while I live in the Clearview area in Queens only pay $1,500 ,a dn live in a basement apartment which my mom owns.

I kind of got jealous that he paying $500 less, and wanted to know if people are paying more or less than $1,500 rent to their parents who own the house.

I have my basement apartment which comes with a kitchen, living room, a bathroom, bedroom, extra room and a private entrance.
