Real spots for Jazz and Food?

Me and a colleague will be in town all of next week, and we want to get away from the tourist area and see some real New Orleans Jazz, and get that non tourist food. I've looked at various articles, and some seem quite helpful, but advice from a local seems like the best route. Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
