If a mod shadow deletes or removes a comment, can they say that they didnt? (Details inside)

Basically if someone makes a comment in a thread, i reply to their comment, but then my comment dissapeared (both when i am logged in and am logged out). I clearly did not delete my response but its gone. i can only assume they shadow deleted or shadow removed it, right? If i ask them if they did, can they lie and say that they didnt?
