Clear Something up for me please. What does it mean when you are being "smothered" in a relationship?

What exactly do you mean when you say your girlfriend/significant other/wife, whatever, is "smothering you". What are they doing that makes you feel like this? What do you want them to do or how do you want them to act in order for you to not feel this way? What do you not want them to do in response to being told that they're smothering you? I have been seeing a lot of posts and other subs like seeking relationship advice or whatever and it (feeling smothered) seems to be a common denominator. I've also heard it a lot from my friends experiencing it in their relationship - From both sides - smotherer and smothee. Can you guys explain or give examples? Curious...Thank you!
