Should I leave my family business for a job?
Hi, I'm M 24, and I've been working in my family business for the past six years ever since my father passed away. I have an elder brother who's 26. Recently I've been getting this thought of leaving this business and going out for a job. This is solely because of the reason that my mother's behavior towards me and my brother is extremely toxic and conditional. I have no control over the finances of the business I'm handling( we have two businesses) and neither do I see her ever giving up control of the business. We don't even get paid much. The amount of money we get paid monthly is even less than some of the staff we have here. She's very mentally and verbally abusive and always makes me feel I've done nothing for the business even though everyone else knows the progress me and my brother have brought ever since we took over. Our family business is pretty expansive and is worth a lot. But the mental torture is becoming too much for me to take which is why I'm considering leaving it and working in corporate. I'm extremely confused whether or not I should go forward with this since it can be a life changing decision. My friends have suggested that I should do it on a trial basis for 5 6 months and I agree with it but I feel if I leave once, even if I come back a few months later, things might be very different on a personal level. I need some help and perspective on whether I should approach this and if yes, then how.
