This is the first of several FAQ posts we'll be putting up to help with troubleshooting common issues. Since many problems require electrical testing, we'll start with basics on how to use a multimeter to diagnose electrical issues.
This is an excellent primer with text and pictures showing the basics of using a multimeter. While it is not specifically for automotive use, the concepts and steps shown here are a good foundation.

With those basic concepts explained, here's a good video on using a meter specifically for automotive testing, including some things to avoid doing in order to prevent damage to your meter.
