When changing a head gasket, how often do heads need to be machined?

I have a 96 ram 1500 that needs a new head gasket. In my laziness, I'd be willing to swap the gaskets but if the heads need to be machined it's not worth it to me. I know the only way to know is to physically check but I'm just wondering the odds because if it's fairly common to need that I'm just gonna scrap it. Thanks.
