At what point did "backyard mechanics" no longer had The opportunity to take their home hobby and make it into a career without formal training?
Post Body
My son is 27 and has been working on cars in the business for about 5 years now but has come to realize that he needs to go to a technical school to get certified in order to move past where he is now.
Edit: Just because I keep seeing this. He does start school in September at an accredited automotive program and is really looking forward to it. I was just wondering at what point could a backyard mechanic move to working at a business without formal training.
