Why does everybody carry long sticks/ branches in LA?

I’ve been here for months, at first I thought it was just the homeless, but I see women, children, even well dressed people all carrying sticks while they walk? Why? I know it’s not my business I just can’t stop being curious, does anybody else do this? Is it protection? I’ve seen so many people do it I lost count, so it definitely means something.
