Was attracted by the low rent, and desperate to get out of parents house.

I feel like I could handle myself well-enough when I went to check the area out, but that was being there only one day.

I am black, female, and raised in the sub-urbs. I have lived in a city before and was fine, house-less individuals (my post got held for saying the other term? But people have had issue with the term “houseless” too so i’m at a loss, here) existing around me doesn’t bother me, I am mainly worried I’d likely be a victim of violence, abduction, etc.

I own a box-cutter knife for self defense but was thinking about maybe buying and learning to use a gun. But I’d really rather avoid trouble.

I’ll be bringing my car, there’s a parking garage across the street from the unit I’m looking at but I’ve read break-ins happen inside garages as well. Its an old, old Lexus rx so I’m worried it’s catalytic converter might get stolen or something. I have a wheel-lock for the actual car itself, though.

I don’t expect to be beloved by the community or anything, heard they don’t like non-hispanics, but will I be fine just going to work everyday and coming back to sleep there at night? Will I be okay if I just keep my head down and mind my business.

Lowkey the sensationalized story about that woman being set on fire by the migrant from Guatemala has my pre-conceived biases going off. I won’t be sleeping outside but I don’t want to be walking back to my place and a group sets me on fire or something just for being there.

I have limited options but this place isn’t my only option, I’d just have to save more.

Edit for more context: i really don’t mind if its “rough”, i could honestly use the character building, but i just don’t want my lily black ass set on fire…so anything before that extreme is fine. No violence or threat of violence wld be ideal

When i was there during the day I was stuck outside the unit waiting to be let in for like 30 min and a group of hispanics called out to me (i think?) negrita! and i just pretended I couldn’t see nor hear them and they eventually left, might not have even been what they said my hearing’s not the best but i just dont want to piss anyone off by moving there. But its the only place with rent this cheap where I wouldn’t have to get a new job/do a 1-2 hour commute…so it actually kinda is my only choice LOL
