I am currenty on a sublease that ends January 1st. It's supposed to be a temporary sublease, then I could move to the lease if people liked me, which they do not. My roommates thought they wrote "february 1st" as the end of the lease, but I double-checked the lease, and let them know it end Jan 1st and sent them a photo of it. They said "oops that's a typo". When it comes to contracts, a typo that was meant to be something else after the fact does not count, right? It does say "six month lease" in one line and they counted incorrectly (started 8/1), so that part is a little uncelar and a reason to check with a lawyer. It also says the tenant can serve 30 days notice to me if I violate an agreement (I'm not sure why it's not stated that I can do the same).
I need to get assistance because legally I don't think I'm responsible for anything they intended to write, but did not actually write. I also partially chose this place because the lease ended during winter break, and I am a student, so January 1st was a good move out date. I will not have time to move at the end of January as grad school will be in session again.
Could anyone help refer me to a pro-bono lawyer/legal nonprofit to help? I am very low-income so I would qualify for any resources restricted to low-income people. If anyone has any experience with this type of thing and wants to weigh in, I would be interested.
I would also love any advice on navigating this socially. This happened last night, and my friend told me to just leave on Jan 1st, there's nothing they can do. Living here has been stressful and distracting enough that I am considering maxing out my student loans to get a studio as my next spot. I'm trying to lay low.
