Why are there so many timed stoplights in this city/county?

Post Body

And no this is not about general traffic synchronization or red lights that are the result of vehicle sensors from the opposite direction. I'm specifically talking about signals that turn red, day in and day out, rush hour or 10:30pm, regardless of whether anyone is waiting at the cross street.

How difficult is it to install vehicle actuation sensors? I'm not even arguing for "green waves," I just hate wasting my time and fuel sitting at the same stoplights every time I approach them when there's literally no cross traffic for the entire cycle.

And if the answer is "traffic calming," then we need to fire every traffic engineer in the city and send them back to engineering school to learn how to properly design safe streets. These stupid timed lights just make aggressive drivers even more angry, so they gun it from red light to red light, and often run red lights because they don't believe they're "real" reds anymore. It's incredibly dangerous
