Are platonic friendships between men and women common in LA?

Hey r/asklosangeles,

I've been struggling with something lately and would love to get some insights from fellow Angelenos.

Is it common and healthy to have platonic friendships between men and women here in LA? It seems like every time I'm nice to a woman, she assumes I have romantic intentions.

For example, if I:

  • Invite a female friend to grab coffee and catch up
  • Offer to help a woman with a project or errand
  • Suggest going to a movie or a concert together
  • Regularly text or call to check in

It often feels like these actions are misinterpreted. I'm genuinely interested in having female friends without any extra thoughts from either side. Is it okay to hang out often with women as a man without it being misinterpreted? What has been your experience?

Same goes for when you have a girlfriend already or she have already a boyfriend, people will assume things in that situation?

Again I have high expectations I hope at least in this city it's cool !
