First off. I have doubts we'll ever have a walkable LA in my lifetime. I know, I am cynical. The car-centric culture here makes me wish I wasn't born here as a person that has always struggled with anxiety and driving-anxiety.
I didn't get my license until 25. If you want to call me a loser go ahead. I'm embarassed by it myself.
People love their cars too much here and irritatingly, it will never ever change to my annoyance. LA is not a city. It is the biggest suburb in America. NYC is the biggest city. And Chicago is America's biggest town.
That being said, in an idealistic world, how would you transform LA into a walk first and public transit oriented city?
I'd actually pick Tokyo and Madrid. Tokyo I believe really started as multiple neighborhoods and they densified and the result was a big mecca. Also, LA has had a lot of Asian influences and I think if there is an Asian city to emulate, it's Tokyo. Madrid I pick in terms of architecture because LA's history with Spanish influence.
LA should have Tokyo's efficiency but it also should have Madrid's architecture.
