Best area to stay in LA for first time visitor?

Post Body

Hello everyone,

My wife and I will be coming over to America from Australia for a holiday this time next year! We are staying in LA for a couple of nights to begin our trip and we are looking at doing the main touristy things while we are in LA (and hopefully catch a NBA game as well while we are in LA).

We were looking at staying in downtown LA for a couple of nights however we heard from a few friends as well from my limited research online that apparently downtown LA is not a good area to stay in? We are not hiring a rental car for our stay so we will be relying on walking/public transport to get around.

We are pretty easy going in terms of hotel costs/prices so the price for a hotel for a night or two isn't an issue. Just looking for the 'quietest/safest' area that has things close by where possible. (shopping attractions etc etc).

Thank you!
