Best method for monthly tickets from South Western Rail?

I moved to London recently and am trying to purchase a monthly train ticket through the South Western Railway phone app. I went to the station and got a photocard, but now I’m realizing that I can’t put a monthly on the app, and I need to get a Smartcard, and then load the monthly onto it. Am I understanding this correctly? Are there any more efficient ways to handle this? Thanks for your help.
